In the event  of extreme heat, I will make the decision of whether it is safe to take your dog out for a walk, based on certain conditions- ---Can the dog avoid walking on black asphalt or concrete surfaces, as their paws may blister? Try holding your hand against the surface for 10 seconds to test temperature.

Should the walk be shortened in time/ distance, or should I opt for a quick potty break and have indoor play time instead?

Breed of dog- flat faced breeds may have trouble breathing, and heavy coated dogs may overheat.

Is the dog under 6 months old, or elderly or obese?

I will always notify you of any change to routine that I need to make.

Signs of heatstroke- hyperthermia  (temperature rises above normal), rapid breathing, reddish tongue, pale gums. Cool the pet down with water, wet towels and a fan slowly. Always get to the vet asap.

Keeping cats cool- if they are outside, allow access to shady areas, and provide plenty of cool fresh drinking water placed in a shady spot.Try to keep them indoors between 12 and 3. Keep curtains and blinds closed and allow them access to a cool tiled floor if you have one, and try ice cubes in their water bowls. If your cat is pale, use sunscreen on their ears to protect them. Look out for heatstroke signs.

Small pets- ensure that their enclosure gives them plenty of shade and ventilation. Think about bringing them inside on days over 30 degrees. Freeze a hot water bottle, wrap in a towel and pop it into their enclosure for them to lie against. Never apply ice directly to your pet. Check for signs of heatstroke including lethargy, rapid breathing, wetness around nose and stretching out fully with sprawled feet and a limp tail. If this happens, wrap him in a damp towel and get to a vet asap.

Groom animals regularly to rid them of loose fur that can trap heat in.

In cold wet weather, does your dog have a raincoat, or is indoor play time the best option again?

Signs of hypothermia caused by a prolonged exposure to cold temperatures- strong shivers and drowsiness. Warm your pet up with a hot water bottle, insulated material such as bubblewrap and blankets, and get to a vet asap.
